Circa 1900, the O.B. Robinson Co. established a community for its sawmill workers 1 mi. from the present Wolverine Post Office. The local P.O. was called Hays from 1908-1914. In 1920, the P.O. was reestablished at the site of the present P.O. but called Gunn. Wolverine Coal bought Gunn in 1926 and renamed the P.O. Wolverine in 1928 (Rennick's 1984 Kentucky Place Names).
