A NOTE ABOUT WHITESBURG'S INCLUSION ON THE MAP:
Whitesburg was added to the map because of its mention in two books: Dodrill's (1971) 20,000 Coal Company Stores in the United States, Mexico and Canada, and Turok's (2004) A Guide to Historic Coal Towns of the Big Sandy River Valley. These books list company stores in Whitesburg run by the Smoot Creek Coal Co., Elkhorn-Jellico Coal Co., Speaks Bros. Coal Co., and others. Whitesburg wasn't built by as a company town like most others on the map, and was in fact founded in 1842 as the county seat and incorporated in 1876. However, since it had company-run interests like the stores and was central to industry in the Elkhorn Coalfields, we decided to include it on the map.
